Parleo → IELTS Speaking
IELTS Speaking
Parleo conducts the oral part in the actual order: short questions about yourself, a monologue based on a cue card, and a discussion of the topic. At the end, it gives an approximate score based on three criteria and shows what would improve it.

Three parts of the exam
Questions about yourself
Four to five short questions about home, work, studies, and habits. Answering with a single word is not allowed here: Parleo encourages a detailed response.
Monologue based on a cue card
You get a topic and three points, one minute for preparation, and up to two minutes for speaking. Parleo doesn't interrupt, just like a real examiner.
Discussion
Abstract questions on the same topic: compare, hypothesize, explain the reason. This tests your ability to reason.
The second part can be taken separately if the monologue is the most challenging.
What Parleo evaluates
| How Parleo evaluates | What it means | |
|---|---|---|
| Fluency and Coherence | score from 4.0 to 9.0 with explanation | whether you maintain your train of thought and if your speech breaks into pauses |
| Lexical Resource | score from 4.0 to 9.0 with explanation | whether you have enough words for complex ideas, and if they are chosen accurately |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | score from 4.0 to 9.0 with explanation | articles, tenses, prepositions, and complex structures |
| Pronunciation | no score | speech transcription is sent to the server; a pronunciation score based on text would be fabricated |
The assessment is for practice. A real score is given by a human examiner, and no program can replace that. But you can see which criterion is holding you back.
Exam vs. regular conversation
- 1During the exam, Parleo does not correct mistakes or suggest words. A real examiner also remains silent.
- 2All errors are collected at the end: a score by criteria, two or three specific things that would improve it, and your phrases next to a stronger option.
- 3In a regular conversation, it's the opposite. Corrections appear immediately after your remark. You can ask for a hint at any time.
Therefore, it's convenient to prepare with two modes: role-playing conversation for daily practice and a full exam simulation once a week.
Frequent questions
Is this an official score
No, it's for practice. A real score is given by a human examiner in an in-person test. Here, the assessment is needed to see where to improve between sessions.
Why isn't pronunciation assessed
The server receives a speech transcript, not a recording. Scoring pronunciation based on text means making it up, so three out of four criteria are evaluated.
Does Parleo correct mistakes during the exam?
No, and this is intentional: a real examiner doesn't teach or correct. All mistakes are collected at the end, for evaluation and analysis.
How long does the practice last?
A full run-through of all three parts is about twenty minutes and twenty to thirty answers. You can do only the second part if the monologue is difficult for you.
Are there tasks for the written part?
No. Only the speaking part — Speaking — is practiced here.
